Thought of the Day.

I was reading Donald Miller's Searching for God Knows What earlier and I started thinking about the part of the Bible where John the Baptist refers to all the things Jesus accomplished during his time on earth, saying, "If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." And then I thought about the Library of Congress, which contains every book ever published in the United States and how it could possibly contain that many books and if it does possess every book ever published, then surely, their building must be undergoing expansion all the freaking time...

But then I started to reflect over what really Jesus accomplished during his time on earth and I started to think about the ripple effect his sacrifice and resurrection made on humanity. It occurred to me that if everyone--past, present, and future--who chose or chooses to accept Christ and what he did and if each of those people were to have a book written about their life and how Jesus changed it, then yes, the number of those books would be innumerable and also never ceasing until Christ's ultimate return.

Jesus' sacrifice didn't end at the cross and neither did his ministry. It's like the miracle of his death and rising continue to change people's lives everyday, creating miracles and seeing amazing things. So of course, the books of the world couldn't contain it all... It would be impossible.

And so now, what John the Baptist was talking about makes a whole lot more sense. Because before, I had a hard time believing that Jesus performed that many miracles in that short of a duration of ministry, because to me, that many books seemed to resemble an expanse similar to that of standing on a shore and looking for the exact point in space where the ocean ends...

It just doesn't.
